The Pitch
The Wilson Four BLX—like the company’s Blade and Steam series—features basalt fibers. According to Wilson, basalt eliminates unwanted vibration on off-center hits, increasing comfort as well as stability. Additionally, like the Wilson Three, the Four includes Double Holes, grommets that expand the sweet spot, as well as the trademark Hammer technology, a head-heavy construction that Wilson says adds further power and stability while maintaining a light weight.

How It Tested
The Wilson Four finds itself betwixt and between genres. On the one hand, it’s a game-improvement racquet like the Wilson Three, with a lightweight, rigid construction and head-heavy balance. But on the other hand, the Four has a reasonably sized 105 sq. in. head and is standard length, both of which are seen not so much in jumbo frames as in tweeners. The Four’s agile, forgiving response jelled well with slower-swinging playtesters, especially those skilled in classic doubles play and slice-and-dice tennis. And while the stick is, through and through, suited to beginner-level players, it works best in the hands of players with a modicum of technique, or those looking to develop it.

Bottom Line
Best for traditional-style, club-doubles players who have lost a step, but still have the swing to be contenders.
