MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Tomas Berdych reached the Australian Open quarterfinals for the second straight year and was booed off the court following a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) win over No. 10 Nicolas Almagro on Sunday at Hisense Arena.
The seventh-seeded Berdych from Czech Republic was jeered by the crowd for refusing to shake hands with Almagro because he believed the Spaniard had deliberately struck him with a ball during a point toward the end of the fourth set.
Almagro chased down a drop shot and hit a forehand that struck Berdych in the arm at the net. The Czech player flopped to the ground as the ball bounced back on Almagro's side of the net.
Almagro put the shot away and then approached the net to apologize, but Berdych didn't respond to him.
