For the most part, tennis is an individual sport. If Frank Dancevic had it his way, things would be different.
DancevicFrom breaking into the top 100 and reaching two ATP World Tour singles finals, Dancevic has found success as a professional. Looking at the big picture, one could say Dancevic’s greatest achievement is his commitment to his country, having appeared in Davis Cup ties for Canada in 12 of the past 13 years.
The Niagara Falls native will look to find similar team success in Mylan World TeamTennis this July, when he debuts for the Philadelphia Freedoms. Dancevic will enter the 39th Mylan WTT season as one of the League’s in-form players. The 29-year-old won his first ATP Challenger title on clay two weeks ago and on Tuesday, thanks to a lucky loser entry, he upset 29th seed Ivo Karlovic in the first round of Wimbledon.
WTT.com caught up with Dancevic to discuss his upcoming Mylan WTT debut, playing for Freedoms’ owner Billie Jean King and more…
What made you decide to play Mylan WTT for the first time this year?
I've always enjoyed the team aspect when playing tennis. I play Davis Cup for Canada and always look forward to those weeks. I felt like it would be a good change from the tour this year to try something different and exciting. I've heard many good things about Mylan WTT from fellow players.
The core of Mylan WTT is ‘team’ – a dynamic you know very well being an integral part of Canada’s most successful Davis Cup squad. What is it about team formats that bring out your best tennis?
Having teammates supporting you can be a huge factor when you are in crucial situation on court. I found myself winning matches and raising my level of play because of my teammates getting behind me when I was pushing my own limits.
The owner of the Philadelphia Freedoms happens to be Mylan WTT co-founder Billie Jean King. How does it feel to be drafted by someone who has made a significant impact to the sport you play?
I have great respect for Billie Jean and everything she has done for tennis. I look forward to representing her team and meeting her for the first time. I hope I can make the Freedoms proud this season.
How familiar are you with the city of Philadelphia?
I have good memories of the city. I played a junior grass court tournament. The cream cheese is a given. I can't start my morning without it!!! Throw a little jam on that bagel as well.
‘Entourages’ are becoming more common with professional tennis players. Who makes up Team Dancevic?
On tour, my wife Nikolina is a big supporter, and my family and friends, who have invested lots of time and patience in my career.
