TAYLOR MADE: "It" kid Taylor Fritz took in a Los Angeles Lakers game just ahead of his first Indian Wells main-draw match as a pro. He sidled up to legends (his term) Roger Federer and Tommy Haas at the Staples Center, and also went behind the scenes to greet a few Lakers. The still-injured Milos Raonic was on hand, too.

REAGAN OPTICS: Recently deceased First Lady Nancy Reagan once had a tennis tournament named after her, and it was there that, circa 1990, she and former President Ronald Reagan met with an up-and-coming sister act named Serena and Venus Williams.

BUD, WISER: The Boston Globe's obituary for newspaper alum Bud Collins is a must-read for those who relish shimmering personality, quintessential professionalism and plainly good stories. Chase that with *The* *New York Times*' own take, which includes a passing mention of Collins' coverage of Vietnam in wartime.

SERENA SAYS: They're both phenoms who turned into arguable greatest-of-all-time stars in their chosen sports, groomed for amazing things by fathers Richard Williams and Earl Woods. Now Serena Williams has advice for Tiger Woods during his injury layoff, something she knows a lot about.

BONUS: Peyton Manning is set to retire on Monday as a Denver Bronco on the heels (hooves?) of a storied NFL career. After 18 seasons, No. 18 recently wrapped up his career as a pro athlete by sewing up a second Super Bowl victory, which catalyzed a number of reactions among pros on the tennis tours. One of those came from Maria Sharapova, who incited a haze of speculation by calling her own press conference for Monday.
