Jannik Sinner has defeated Daniil Medvedev, 6-1, 6-2, to not only reach his third Miami Open final, but to pull off a pretty nifty stat.

With his straight-set victory over the world No. 4, Sinner has now had wins over every single Top 10 ranking in his career.

He had already beaten a No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7, No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10, and now he’s completed his collection.

He had been 0-5 against No. 4s going into his match on Friday, though he very nearly got that one out of the way two years ago, when he held a match point but ultimately fell to then-No. 4 Alcaraz in the 2022 US Open quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-7 (0), 7-5, 6-3.

SINNER’S FIRST CAREER WINS OVER EACH TOP 10 RANKING:
d. No. 1 Alcaraz in 2023 Miami SFs
d. No. 2 Alcaraz in 2023 Beijing SFs
d. No. 3 Tsitsipas in 2023 Rotterdam 2nd Rd

Sinner came out on fire on Friday, storming out to a 5-0 lead in less than half an hour. Medvedev got on the board with a love hold for 5-1 before Sinner in turn held at love to close out the first set.

After Sinner jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second set, there were some signs of life from Medvedev, as he held to close the gap to 2-1 and brought up a break point in the next game to get back on serve—but Sinner swatted it away, held for 3-1 and eventually stretched his lead to 5-1, and they held from there until it was over.

The Italian finished the match with 16 winners to 12 unforced errors.

He’s now through to the final of the Miami Open for the third time in the last four years, having finished runner-up in both of his previous finals, to Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and to Medvedev a year ago.

If Sinner can win the title this year, he’ll rise from No. 3 to a new career-high ranking of No. 2, one-upping his own record for highest-ranked Italian player in either ATP or WTA rankings history.
