Big finals don’t get much tighter, or better, than Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka's melee in Madrid

A day after Jerry Shang won a four-hour marathon at the Mutua Madrid Open, two more teenagers on the ATP Tour joined the 19-year-old in the second round.

Joao Fonseca celebrated his first ATP Masters 1000 win Thursday when he overcame fellow teen Alex Michelsen, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. The 17-year-old wild card capitalized on six of his 11 break points to advance, finishing with 30 winners to 26 unforced errors in setting up a contest with No. 29 seed Cameron Norrie.

Fonseca has already reached a pair of tour-level quarterfinals this year, at the 500-level event on home soil in Rio de Janeiro and last week's 250-level event in Bucharest.

Fonseca now owns five tour-level wins this season.

Jakub Mensik, 18, also moved through. The world No. 74 defeated Yannick Hanfmann, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov awaits the Czech, who contested his first ATP final at February’s Qatar ExxonMobil Open.

Elsewhere, Lorenzo Sonego lined up a clash with countryman Jannik Sinner following his 6-2, 7-5 victory over qualifier Richard Gasquet. The top-seeded Sinner is undefeated in their head-to-head series, winning all four of their prior encounters during the 2023 season. None of those matchups occurred on clay, however.

Roberto Bautista Agut made the most of his lucky loser opportunity, battling past Daniel Elahi Galan, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1, in two hours and 42 minutes. The home favorite gets 16th seed Karen Khachanov for a spot in the third round.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, Matteo Arnaldi and Tomas Machac were among the victorious competitors on the day. Auger-Aliassime now spars with left-hander Adrian Mannarino, Arnaldi gets a crack at world No. 4 Daniil Medvedev and Machac takes on No. 14 seed Ben Shelton.
