Mirza quits singles to prolong career

Indian says '13 could have been her last, had she kept up singles

India’s Sania Mirza, who won the Dubai doubles title on Saturday with Bethanie Mattek-Sands, tells The National that had she not stopped playing singles last year, 2013 could have been her last season.

I have had three surgeries over the last five years and it’s been tough,” said the 26-year-old, who reached a career-high No. 27 in singles in 2007. “I had to make a choice about whether I want to play another year of tennis, where I push my body, or whether I want to play four more years of tennis. I love tennis too much to leave it in one year.”
