Ahead of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 tournament, Andy Murray tells L’Equipe that he is in better shape now than he was at this time last year and feels prepared for an assault on the clay-court season.

“I love playing on clay, but it takes me a little more time to adjust because I do not often play on this surface,” he said. “I want to play it more often, but it's impossible with my annual  schedule.”

World No. 2 Murray — who could lose his spot to third-ranked Roger Federer this week if he doesn't reach the quarterfinals — says that he is not currently thinking about seizing the world No. 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic.

"I do not have that in mind every day, I'm preparing for a tournament, not for No. 1,” he said. “I would love to become [No.1], like all players, but it is not my main goal."

Murray was also asked about eight-time champion Rafael Nadal’s return to Monte Carlo? "Oh, I think it will go very well for him," he said.
