After being suspended from Australia’s first round Davis Cup tie by captain Patrick Rafter and Tennis Australia, Bernard Tomic tells AFP that wasn’t planning on playing in the competition to begin with. Australia opens its 2013 Davis Cup campaign in early February against Taiwan.

“I was never meant to play that Davis Cup tie,” Tomic said. “I spoke to Pat (about that). I’m going to use that time for training and to prepare for tournaments in America.”
The 20-year-old, who has been accused of having a poor attitude both on and off the court, also told the Australian TV channel Ten Network that he could turn things around.
“I’ve had a slippery slope the last year,” he said. “It’s changing me and I’ll prove I’m going to be the best-ever player one day to play this game.”
