Twenty-three Grand Slam singles titles: one more than Steffi Graf, one behind Margaret Court, and more than anyone in the Open era. What else can you say about Serena Williams’ latest achievement?

Where there’s a Williams, there’s a way. Both Williams sisters spoke as well as they swung over the Australian fortnight, giving speeches that were as memorable as the 6-4, 6-4 match itself. Venus Williams’ words were gracious and arresting, while Serena—who has now won two of the last three majors and will become No. 1 next week—gave nearly all of the credit to her slightly older sibling.

When it was Serena’s turn to talk, she emphasized the role Venus has played in her upbringing and success as a professional. As sibling rivalries go, Serena leads Venus 16-11, and is 7-2 against her in Grand Slam finals. But it’s never been about the numbers with these two.

What’s next for both Venus and Serena? It’s hard to say, though it’s easy to let your mind wander after this dual display of dominance. Serena, at 35, didn’t lose a set on her way to the title, and Venus, at 36, was more durable and determined than scores of younger talents. At their best, these two are still the best, and right now, there’s no end in sight.
