Rafael Nadal will have to have more scans on his injury before deciding on his return to tour.

The world No. 2 withdrew from this week's event in Acapulco with an upper-leg problem similar to the muscle injury that led him to retire in the fourth round of the Australian Open. Nadal said he began experiencing a "sharp pain" during practice the day before he was scheduled to play his opening round at Acapulco.

He is now aiming to return at Indian Wells, but will first have to establish the extent of the injury.

"I went for a scan," Nadal told press at Acapulco as he announced his withdrawal. "I do not yet know what it is. It is in a similar position as the Australian, but it seems to be a little less. There is liquid, and until that reduces a little you cannot do the relevant tests, and we will not know 100 percent what I have. "

His previous muscle injury required a three-week break, but Nadal did not want to begin speculating about when he can now resume competing.

"It is not a time to make drastic decisions," he said. "A great goal for me would be Indian Wells, but today my goal is just to know the extent of the injury. If it's for Indian Wells, great. If it's for Miami, good. If not, it's for the clay season."

Nadal was the top seed at Acapulco.
