World No. 33 Monfils aiming to get "back to the top" with new team

Gael Monfils wants to build on his title victory at Rotterdam, and has a new team he says could help him return back up the rankings.

The 32-year-old defeated good friend Stanislas Wawrinka to win the second ATP 500 title of his career and told press that he does not want to stop there.

"It was a good tournament," he said. "With my coach, I'm going to try to keep working and keep going, come back to the top."

Monfils just started working with new coach Liam Smith, as part of what is a new team.

"I want to thank my new team," he told the crowd. "We did a good job for our first tournament together."

Monfils reached a career-high of No. 6 in 2016, but has been frequently injured and inconsistent in his performances.

The Frenchman also said that during the week he had been experiencing some problems with his wrist. Upon returning home, he plans to have the injury looked at and will announce whether he is to play at Marseille next weekas scheduled.

Monfils is No. 33 in the rankings.
