The Argentine won one of the strangest French Open finals in history when he recovered from a two-set deficit to defeat fellow Argentine Guillermo Coria in 2004. The 44th-ranked Gaudio saved two match points to become the first Argentinean men's Grand Slam champion since Guillermo Vilas won the 1977 Roland Garros. After struggling to maintain his ranking for a few years, Gaudio fell outside the Top 100. In 2009, he played mostly on the Challenger circuit with only modest success. Gaudio retired on August 31, 2012.
