The 87th-ranked wild card surprised five-time champion Roger Federer, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to win the Halle title for the second time in June, 2012. It was Haas' 13th career title and first since he won Halle in 2009. The former world No. 2 hadn't beaten Federer in more than a decade, losing nine straight matches, but snapped that skid against the six-time Wimbledon winner. Haas finished 2012 as the oldest man ranked inside the Top 50, making a jump of 184 spots during the year. In March, 2013, Haas was eight days short of his 35th birthday when he beat No. 1 Novak Djokovic to become the third oldest man in the history of the ATP rankings to be a world No. 1. Haas, who holds both German and American citizenship, reached his first Roland Garros quarterfinal in June, 2013.
