Former Wimbledon junior champion Jurgen Melzer, who failed to surpass the third round of his first 30 Grand Slam tournaments, enjoyed a breakthrough by reaching the 2010 Roland Garros semifinals with wins over David Ferrer and Novak Djokovic. The left-handed Austrian's all-court skill makes him a singles and doubles threat; he's held Top 10 rankings in both disciplines. Melzer beat No. 1 Rafael Nadal en route to the Shanghai quarterfinals, one of 13 quarterfinal or better results in 2010 as he finished the year with a career-high 51 singles victories. Melzer won doubles titles at Wimbledon and the Shanghai Masters in 2010. Melzer and Philipp Petzschner captured their second Grand Slam doubles title at the 2011 U.S.Open. Despite playing with a broken big toe, Melzer won his fourth career title in Memphis in February, 2012, taming two of tennis' biggest servers, John Isner (in the quarterfinals) and Milos Raonic, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the final to become the first 30-year-old to win Memphis since Ivan Lendl in 1991.
