Her distinctive, sometimes unconventional on-court apparel and outspoken nature has earned Bethanie Mattek-Sands a reputation as one of the colorful characters in women's tennis. A fashionista nicknamed the "Lady Gaga of tennis", Mattek-Sands has worn a leopard-print dress at the U.S. Open, a tube top, shorts, knee-high socks and basketball shoes at Wimbledon and a dress that resembled a toga. An all-court player who is comfortable at net, Mattek-Sands has won 12 doubles titles and has represented the United States in Fed Cup competition since 2009. She has been ranked as high as No. 30 in singles and No. 11 in doubles. Born in Rochester, Minn., Bethanie began playing tennis at age 5 and eventually moved to Florida where she trained at the Evert Academy and the Rick Macci Academy before turning pro at 15.
