The best player to emerge from Estonia, 5'11" Kaia Kanepi is a powerful, aggressive baseliner who has been a pioneer for Estonian tennis. She is the first Estonian to win a WTA title (2010 Palermo), the first to crack the Top 20, the first to beat a reigning world No.1 and the first to reach a major quarterfinal (she contested the 2008 Roland Garros quarters, advanced to successive quarters at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2010 and returned to the Roland Garros quarterfinals in 2012). Kanepi opened the 2012 season winning her first WTA Premier-level title in Brisbane and finished with a year-end, career-high rank of No. 19. An outstanding junior, Kanepi was the No. 1 junior in the ITF rankings and beat Svetlana Kuznetsova to win the 2001 Roland Garros junior title.
