Sidelined by blood clots in her legs that caused her ranking to plummet to No. 262 in 2012, Flipkens was ranked so low she couldn't even gain admittance to the 2012 Wimbledon qualifying event. In 2013, Flipkens returned to Wimbledon, upsetting 2011 champion Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals to reach her first Grand Slam semifinal. An all-court player who can play serve-and-volley tennis, Flipkens won her first WTA title at Québec City in 2012.
