Juan Monaco enjoyed a breakthrough 2007 season winning three clay court titles: Kitzbuhel, Poertschach and Buenos Aires. Born in Tandil, the same hometown of Davis Cup teammate Juan Martin del Potro, Monaco advanced to finals in Vina del Mar and Poertschach in 2008. The Argentine grinder led the ATP in clay-court wins (29) in a 2009 campaign that saw him contest finals in Buenos Aires, Båstad and Bucharest. The 2010 Santiago runner-up reached his first career Masters 1000 semifinal in Shanghai after missing three months of the 2010 season with a left wrist injury. In 2011, Monaco represented Argentina in three Davis Cup ties, including an opening loss to Rafael Nadal in the Davis Cup final on the red clay of Seville. He beat three Spaniards — Nicolas Almagro, Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Ferrer — to advance to the Valencia final where he lost to another Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, 2-6, 6-4, 6-7(3). Monaco captured two clay-court titles in the first three months of 2012 — Viña del Mar and Houston and reached the Miami semifinals — to rise to No. 14 in the rankings in April, 2012. Monaco defeated Tommy Haas to win Hamburg and crack the Top 10 for the first time in July, 2012. Monaco won four titles in 2012, finishing the year ranked No. 12.
