The only Cypriot ever to play in a Grand Slam tournament, shot-maker Marcos Baghdatis reached the 2006 Australian Open final (losing to Roger Federer). At his best on hard courts, Baghdatis has won three of his four titles on hard court — 2006 Beijing, 2009 Stockholm and 2010 Sydney —with his other title coming on carpet in Zagreb in 2007. The former junior No. 1 reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2006. A crowd-pleasing player who shows emotion on court, Baghdatis achieved a career-high ranking of No. 8 in 2006. In June 2015, the Cypriot defeated top seed and No. 7 David Ferrer in the second round of Nottingham, earning his first win over a top-10 player in more than two years. After leading 2-1 in the first set, Baghdatis pulled out of the semifinals against Denis Istomin due to a calf injury. Baghdatis married former WTA pro Karolina Sprem on July 14, 2012; their daughter Zahara was born on October 20, 2012.
