A tenacious, grinding counter-puncher, Shahar Peer is the highest-ranked Israeli in history, reaching a career-high rank of No. 11 in January, 2011. The Jerusalem native owns five WTA titles and reached quarterfinals at the Australian and U.S. Opens in 2007. In 2009, she was denied entry into the Dubai tournament in Muslim-run United Arab Emirates because of her Israeli citizenship (the UAE does not have diplomatic relations with Israel). The controversy incited support for Peer from top players, including Venus Williams and Andy Roddick. She reached the Dubai semifinals in 2010 and the quarters in 2011. Peer won the Australian Open junior title in 2004; four years later she partnered Victoria Azarenka to reach the Australian Open doubles final.
