A power-based baseliner who likes to take the first strike in rallies, Yanina Wickmayer signaled her status as a rising player when she reached the 2009 U.S. Open semifinals. Wickmayer was named WTA Most Improved Player in 2009 and reached a career-high rank of No. 12 in 2010. In 2011, Wickmayer advanced to the Auckland final and Indian Wells semifinals. Her three WTA tour titles have come at Auckland, Linz and Estoril. Her mother died of cancer when Yanina was a child. Shortly after her mother's passing, her father and coach, Marc, took his daughter to Florida when she was 9 for a change of scenery and that's when Yanina began playing tennis seriously. Wickmayer is from the Flemish-speaking part of Belgium like Kim Clijsters, whom she cites as a tennis role model.
