The left-handed Russian is an aggressive baseliner who advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2012 Australian Open and backed up that result reaching the 2013 Australian Open quarterfinals. Makarova partnered Elena Vesnina to win her first Grand Slam doubles title at the 2013 Roland Garros. In February, 2014, Makarova won her first title in nearly four years defeating Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 7-6 (7), in the Pattaya final. On September 6, 2014, Makarova and Elena Vesnina became the first Russian pair to win the U.S. Open doubles title, defeating Hall of Famer Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
