Carla Suarez Navarro made a name for herself in 2008 when she reached the French Open quarterfinals as a qualifier. After that impressive run, it took her six years to win her first singles title, in Oeiras. That same year she won her first career doubles title, in Stanford with Garbine Muguruza. On February 29, 2016, after winning the title in Doha, Suarez Navarro made her debut in the Top 10 (No. 6). The right-handed Spaniard is known for her sweeping one-handed backhand, and she’s particularly difficult to beat on clay. Suarez Navarro has reached the singles quarterfinals in Paris, Melbourne and Flushing Meadows, and in 2014 she reached the French Open doubles semifinals. Suarez Navarro’s favorite athletes are fellow tennis players Steffi Graf, Lleyton Hewitt and Justine Henin, and legendary basketball player Michael Jordan. Suarez Navarro’s game has been compared to Henin’s.
