Packing potent power on serve for a player 5'6", Simona Halep is an aggressive baseliner who won the 2008 Roland Garros junior singles title. Halep scored her first Top 20 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova in Toronto in 2011 and weeks later, playing on a sprained ankle, she upset reigning Roland Garros champion Li Na at the U.S. Open. In June, 2013, Halep won her first WTA title on clay at Nurnberg and her second on grass at 's-Hertogenbosch. After Wimbledon, Halep won Budapest—her third title of the year. In a rematch of the Moscow final, Halep defeated Samantha Stosur, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the Sofia final to capture her sixth title of 2013 in November. Halep finished 2013 second to Serena Williams, who won 11 titles. In February, 2014, Halep beat three Top 10 opponents in succession — Sara Errani, Agnieszka Radwanska and Angelique Kerber — to claim her seventh career title in Doha and rise to a career-high rank of No. 9. On June 7, 2014, Halep played her first Grand Slam final falling to Maria Sharapova, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4, in a three hour, two minute French Open title match. Halep reached the Wimbledon semifinals, losing to Genie Bouchard. The top-seeded Halep beat Roberta Vinci in the Bucharest final to capture her eighth career title on July 13, 2014. Halep underwent breast reduction surgery in the summer of 2009.
