Irina-Camelia Begu earned the 2011 WTA Newcomer of the Year award after a breakthrough season that saw her reach her first two WTA finals and finish the season ranked No. 40. As a qualifier playing in just her third WTA main draw, Begu reached the Marbella final, falling to Victoria Azarenka. The 5'11" power-based baseliner was also a runner-up in Budapest and reached the Dallas semifinals. She began playing tennis at age three when she was introduced to the game by her aunt, who is a coach.
