Watch: Monfils takes video of crowd doing wave, giggles with Gulbis
Gael Monfils has regaled the 2013 French Open crowd with compelling, dramatic performances so far at Roland Garros. First he topped No. 6 Tomas Berdych in the first round in a scintillating five-set bout, and he followed that up with a four-set defeat of Ernests Gulbis. At one point, whilst Gulbis was away taking a bathroom break, Monfils whiled away the time by winding his arm around his head—not difficult for a limber, spindly guy such as him—and filming the crowd, decidedly in his favor, as it performed the Wave in the stadium. See the scene here:
Here's more on Monfils' clip, including his ask of the chair umpire if it was permissible and Gulbis' own reaction. The two hard-fighting, emotional pros are hardly on poor terms, enjoying a laugh at the conclusion of one changeover. Gulbis expressed after the match that he is, more or less, a Monfils fan.
What do you think of Monfils' theatrics so far at this French Open? Can he make a deep run?
