Sergei Bubka Jr. tells the New York Times that he has only managed to hit a few balls since he fell out of a third-floor apartment window in Paris last November. Bubka said he was accidentally locked in a bedroom of a friend’s apartment and while looking out a window for a way to reach another room, he leaned on an air-conditioning panel, which broke.

Bubka underwent  eight hours of surgery and was on crutches for  six months.

“I lost 10 kilos,” he told the New York Times. “So I have to build all my muscles again now. I do bikes, I do skis, I do little sit-ups… I hit a couple of [tennis] balls on one leg, but now I feel like I can slowly playing some mini-tennis to start feeling the ball again. And in a month or two I should be able to start running. The right leg is still weak. It’s painful from time to time, around the hip.”

The 26-year-old Bubka is ranked No. 277. He said that his ex-girlfriend, world No. 3 Victoria Azarenka, came to Paris to visit him in the hospital.

“We’re still good friends,” he said of Azarenka, who now dates the pop singer RedFoo. “I’m happy that we managed to, even if we broke up, we managed to communicate well, and be really good friends.”
