King edges Puig in third-set tiebreaker to reach Guangzhou semifinals

GUANGZHOU, China (AP)—American qualifer Vania King advanced to the semifinals of Guangzhou Open on Thursday when the three remaining seeded players were upset.

King beat eighth-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Also, unseeded Yvonne Meusburger of Austria upset second-seeded Alize Cornet of France 6-4, 6-1. Zheng Jie beat third-seeded Laura Robson of Britain 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Wild-card entry Shuai Zhang of China defeated Johanna Konta of Britain 7-5, 6-3.

King will face Zheng in the semifinals, and Shuai will face Meusburger.
