Five men have been charged with the gang-rape of an American female player at a recent Futures tournament in Greece. A police source told AFP that the woman said she had consensual sex with a Romanian youth, but was then gang-raped by a coach, two players, a dance instructor, and a fitness coach, some of whom were reportedly French and others German.
The alleged rape took place at a tournament party in Marathon, a town near Athens, on October 3. The five men denied the charge.
The newspaper Le Parisien says two French tennis players aged 20 and 21 years were arrested and placed in custody, and that the American player who was allegedly assaulted is 25 years old. The French players have already retained lawyers. Le Parisien stated that there is a video of the incident that was taken by one of the suspects.
The ITF confirmed to TENNIS.com that it has been informed of the incident by the tournament and is taking the matter seriously.
