You already know "The Twelve Days of Christmas"—so we're doing something a little different this year. Throughout December, we'll highlight 12 things about the 2014 PowerShares Series, a competitive tennis circuit featuring legendary icons and world-renowned champions beginning on February 5.

For our sixth Q&A, we spoke to Todd Martin, who faced Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras in major finals.

TENNIS.com: How do you train to prepare for the PowerShares Series?

TODD MARTIN: With my Todd Martin Tennis Instruction and Development business, I always have a racquet in my hand. So when it comes time to prepare for competition, I don't worry too much about how I'm hitting, but try to increase my off-court exercise, especially to protect my shoulder and back. Then, I will try to sneak in a couple sets per week.

TENNIS.com: Among PowerShares Series players, who was your toughest opponent during your career and why?

TODD MARTIN: Pete Sampras was my toughest opponent. Patrick Rafter was my favorite. I loved competing against him because he had the purest sense of competition of all the guys. It was obvious he loved being out there and laid it all on the line every day.

TENNIS.com: Who are you most looking forward to facing this season?

TODD MARTIN: You name it. I'm excited to have a game, period!

TENNIS.com: Most bizarre moment you ever experienced on court?

TODD MARTIN: Fernando Meligeni being defaulted in the semis of Estoril (Portugal) for trying to hit a ball out of the arena. But he didn't aim high enough and plucked a fifth-row spectator right in the forehead. Scary, sad, bizarre, etc.

TENNIS.com: Your best serving tip for recreational players?

TODD MARTIN: Keep it simple and trust that power comes from timing and not force.

TENNIS.com: If you could have played any other sport professionally, what would you choose?

TODD MARTIN: I grew up wanting to be a hoopster. However, seeing the longevity of professional golfers makes that pretty appealing.
