The WTA has confirmed that Serena Williams has joined Victoria Azarenka in withdrawing from Doha. Williams is out with the back injury she sustained during the Australian Open. Sabine Lisicki has also withdrawn, due to a shoulder injury.

Azarenka pulled out of both Doha and the following week's tournament in Dubai with a left foot injury. The world No. 2’s camp told TENNIS.com that she starting feeling pain during the Australian Open, where she lost to Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals. Her next scheduled tournament is Indian Wells in early March.

Serena also pulled out of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, which begins in March. In a statement, Williams said, "After careful consideration, I will not return to the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open this year. I send my best wishes to everyone involved with the tournament."
