2014 French Open Fashion Misses​

First the Spin relayed fashion findings in positive hues, and now it's time to shed light on the unforced errors, sartorially speaking. What we came to do we shall do quickly:

Agent orange: ​Svetlana Kuznetsova's ​​Qiaodan number ​​makes for a monochromatic bore with what would be a dynamic statement dress in other settings. The blue trim and details can't save this ensemble from washing her out on the clay. We throw up our hands, too, Sveta.​

​Jelena Jankovic's quasi-can can dress​ has a flattering cut, but its black-and-white motif seemed like a recycled checkered-flag look reminiscent of last weekend's Indianapolis 500 race. Just say no, JJ. One trusts you will "Fila" remorse for wearing this.

It seemed obvious that Stan Wawrinka was desultory about his play in dropping his first-round match, and he had every right to be if he gazed down at his dull black-and-yellow kit. That was a bumblebee look that lacked buzz, as uninspired as his showing, and unbecoming for someone who won the previous 2014 Grand Slam event.​

Your loyal Spin keeper is a sucker for purple, and that part of Simona Halep's adidas attire works—but the orange half blends with the red dirt too much, like she's partly camouflaged. (Maybe it makes sense, as despite her success in the past year or more, Halep continues to fly just below the radar at major events.)​

Soundly swept from the red clay by Novak Djokovic in straight sets, Joao Sousa's Lotto shirt looked like a wannabe art student's watercolor painting. Pass. (But not in a good way.)

The "sunshine," as it were, was gone at this tournament, and Caroline Wozniacki didn't look confident in her green adidas getup either. Losing to Yanina Wickmayer (remember her?) in a tough opening match, Woz's look appeared left over from a St. Patrick's Day party.​ She didn't really want to be in Paris, and now she gets time to grieve.​

Pity Alisa Kleybanova: She had to stare down Halep, a hot performer for the past 17 months, and lost the first 11 games of their first-round French Open affair. She also lost the style game, with an EleVen by Venus top that echoed Venus Williams's own skirt, which was also dismissed quickly from the event. Somehow that skirt worked better than this top, which seems a bit messy perched atop a dull white skirt. ​
