One of the tropes commonly trotted out about matches between Venus and Serena Williams in the past week was this: Venus hadn't beaten her younger sister since 2009. After doing just that in three sets Saturday, Venus told Tennis Channel's Rennae Stubbs, "Yeah, it's been a minute. I don't think we've played that often ..." And the 34-year-old was correct. Though they faced off in singles matches five times in 2009, until Saturday, they had played just once since then, a forgettable thrashing that Serena delivered in the Family Circle Cup semifinals in 2013.
