Juan Martin del Potro has officially announced he will not return this season from wrist surgery. The 2009 U.S. Open champion plans to return to competition in 2015.

"I'm training well, but the recovery from the wrist surgery is slow and I'm still not ready to be in the competitive level that allows me to face the best players in the last two tournaments of the year," del Potro said in a statement. "I prefer to be patient, cautious, and get ready for next year. I don't suffer any pain in the wrist, I'm feeling better day by day."

A DPA report said del Potro had considered playing Basel next week before pulling the plug on his season.

The 26-year-old Argentine has not played in eight months since undergoing left wrist surgery. The statement said he plans to come back next year and will train intensively during the offseason.
