Tommy Robredo says his gesture to Andy Murray at net at the conclusion of the Valencia final was meant in a friendly way, reflecting their two epic encounters at recent tournaments.

Murray defeated Robredo in three hours and 20 minutes, fending off five match points, having also saved five match points in a win over the Spaniard when the two met in Shenzhen a few weeks ago. Robredo showed Murray both middle fingers as the two were about to shake hands:

Robredo told Spanish press following the match that he appreciated the contests and his performance despite the defeats. "Andy told me... that it has been an incredible battle and a great match," said the veteran. "When you're about to beat a player like Murray, who is playing the Masters (Tour Finals), is amazing, put it on a DVD and see it again with popcorn, and a Coke."

His gesture was a light-hearted one, reflecting the tightness of the contests.

"Andy off the court is a ten, very proper, it is difficult to be angry with him…we both enjoyed the game and that is good for the people and the youth," said Robredo.
