Judy Murray says that her older son, Jamie, drove his younger brother, Andy, to achieve great success. Andy Murray, 27, has won an Olympic gold medal and two Grand Slam singles titles, including Wimbledon, while Jamie, 28, is a Top 50 doubles player who won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title in 2007 alongside Jelena Jankovic.

“He always did everything a bit better than Andy up to the age of 13 or 14 and Andy started to overtake him, certainly in tennis,” Judy told the *BBC*. “He wanted to do everything Jamie could do and Jamie was always better than him.”

“When they were nine and 10, they went to France to play in their first overseas tournament, which might sound unbelievably young, but they were good enough to do something like that at that age. Andy lost in the semifinal to a French player called Gael Monfils, who is in the Top 20 in the world just now. Andy lost to him in three sets and in the final, Jamie beat Gael Monfils 6-0, 6-1. All I heard for about three monthsafter that was, ‘You only won because I tired him out.’

“That’s just one example…They got on well—but they fought like any brothers do.”
