Angelique Kerber said she didn't sleep until 6:30 a.m. after besting Davia Gavrilova, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (2), 6-3, in a match that began at 12:33 a.m. and wrapped up at 3:09 a.m. in Sydney.

"I was in the bed in, I don't know, 6:30 actually," she said. "So I slept five, six hours today. It's of course tough. That's tennis actually. Sometimes it is like the last two nights for me. Actually, it was strange. I never played so late. If you're waiting so long and it's like 10:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m., and they are still playing and it's raining and you're still waiting. So it was not easy to be focused at this time, but I was trying to, just thinking about the game and not thinking about what time it is."
The World No. 9 then had to play again on the same day against Garbine Muguruza beginning at 10:00 p.m. and winning 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 around 11:40 p.m.
Kerber said that it took a while to wake up.
"First set I was actually not on the court. It was tough for me to come in my rhythm because in the first set I was one, two steps too slow and I was feeling this," she said. "So after the first set I was trying to waking up and to moving a little bit better. So it works at the end. I will try to tomorrow, maybe to make my warm up a little bit better and a little bit longer. So not losing the first set like 6‑0."
