Sam Sumyk says he decided to stop coaching Victoria Azarenka during the Australian Open, suggesting they could both benefit from working with someone else.

In an interview with the *New York Times*, the French coach said it was time for a change following five years with the former No. 1, during which she won two Grand Slam titles. Sumyk informed Azarenka of his decision following a fourth-round defeat to Dominika Cibulkova Down Under.

Sumyk has since began coaching Eugenie Bouchard, telling the publication he also received two other coaching requests. “I’m always looking for challenges,” Sumyk said. “I hate comfort. The moment I am in a comfortable situation, it’s the end of me growing up as a coach or as a person, if you want. I want to be the best coach possible.”

Sumyk is also the husband of his former player's agent, Meilen Tu, who is still representing Azarenka. He said money was not an issue. "No, my deal with Vika was very good," he said.

Sumyk also advised Azarenka that she could do with new input, though he would not give a reason, saying, “That’s between us, but that’s what I told her.”

Azarenka said in an interview with the publication that Sumyk's decision was difficult for her. “It was tough, because of the relationship we have,” she said. “It’s more than just a player and a coach, so that’s a tough part. But the professional decision I have to respect that, and I do."

Azarenka has since begun working with Wim Fissette, and will play next week's Doha tournament.
