Tennis fans know full well the account of Monica Seles's struggle with BED: binge-eating disorder. In her second memoir, Getting a Grip, she told of her nearly decade-long fight against heightened food cravings. This week, in an interview with ABC's Lara Spencer, she speaks at length again about the food-centric issues that largely derailed the lioness's share of her comeback after a tragic stabbing on court:

Seles also stars in a new PSA about BED (holy acronyms!) as a spokesperson for Shire Pharmaceuticals. In the minute-plus clip, she says, "My binge-eating episodes will usually happen in the evenings when I would be back by myself after a long day at the tennis courts and would just eat large quantities of food."

The usual suspects—pretzels and potato chips—served as catalysts for the nine-time Grand Slam singles champion's emotional and physical woes. Seles describes the turning point in her saga: A friend asked her to appear as a bridesmaid in a wedding, and she wanted to look "glamorous," but had to keep getting refitted due to her fluctuating weight.

It's been said that the longest book in the world is The Book of If, and Seles certainly has her own weighty chapter therein. The good news is this: Between penning a young-adult tome and telling her intimate life story, she's writing new chapters all the time.
