Madison Brengle, who reached her first WTA Premier semifinal with a win against Caroline Garcia in Stuttgart, said that she has not been able to bring her coaches with her to Europe just yet. The only American still playing at Stuttgart, Brengle upset No. 4 Petra Kvitova in the second round.
Currently ranked No. 43, the 25-year-old works with her mother, Gaby Brengle, and cracked the Top 100 at the end of 2014. She will break into the Top 40 next week. “I don’t have a coach with me here. I’m here by myself,” Brengle told The TennisIsland.
“It’s okay. It’s not the worst thing. Maybe my parents are going to come for a little.”
Brengle's ranking has risen following several notable results this season. In January, starting in the qualifying of Hobart, she won seven matches before losing in the final. At the Australian Open, she beat Andrea Petkovic in the first round before losing to Madison Keys in the fourth round. She also reached the third round of Charleston, losing to Petkovic.
She plays Angelique Kerber in the semifinals of Stuttgart. “After Australia, people, like, asked me, ‘What do you want to work on, what are your goals.’ A big one for me was having better results on clay,” Brengle said. “I played some good matches here and there, but it wasn’t as solid all the way through as I would have liked. So, it’s kind of one of my goals to play every match quite well on the clay.”
