PARIS—Timea Bacsinszky advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros with a straight-set upset of No. 16 seed Madison Keys. The world No. 24 has yet to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament but has reached a career-high ranking this season (No. 21) thanks to two title runs in Acapulco and Monterrey.

Her next opponent will be fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova. Bacsinszky says she knows how she wants to play before she goes on court, but isn’t against altering her approach if it’s necessary.

“Before I play each match, I have a pre-established tactics. Like I have a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C,” she said. “I'm a very spontaneous person. You probably noticed that for those of you who have been following me for a while. That's something you can also see on the court. This is also something I use. I use my instinct at crucial moments in the match, or maybe at less crucial moments. There is always this touch of spontaneity. I'm not always sticking to the tactics.”
