PARIS—Thanasi Kokkinakis believes that he has a shot to beat fellow Australian, Bernard Tomic, in the second round of the French Open.

The 6-foot-5 Kokkinakis, who ended 2014 ranked No. 150, is currently No. 84 and has played well on clay this year, qualifying in Istanbul, Madrid and a Challenger in Bordeaux, which he won. The 19-year-old has played Tomic twice on hard courts this year, losing in Brisbane in straight sets and at Indian Wells in three sets.

“The last match at Indian Wells, I really felt like I should've won, to be honest,” Kokkinakis said. “Couple of missed chances here and there. I think he knows I'm not far off with him and I know I'm not far off, so I guess I can take that confidence going into the next match.

"If I beat Bernie I would've played [Novak] Djokovic in the quarters there. Yeah, love to get a crack at Novak, but Bernie is a tough task. Got to go out and try and play the ball. I know his game and he knows mine.”
