Rafael Nadal, playing with fellow Mallorcan Jaume Munar, lost his opening doubles match in Hamburg to Australian Open champions Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolleli, 6-4, 6-2.

It was Nadal's first competitive match since his second-round defeat at Wimbledon to Dustin Brown. He faces Fernando Verdasco in the first round of singles.

Nadal, who also got Munar a singles wildcard, said, "He's from Mallorca, too, and he is one of the best juniors in the world."

"It's good to have him here, it's good to play doubles with him and it will be a great opportunity for him," added the No. 10, who also took a wildcard into the tournament.

Munar won his first-round singles match when fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez retired at 1-2 in the first set. The victory will more than double his career earnings.
