Rafael Nadal says his recent dip in form does not have him considering retirement, with the Spaniard adding he is still motivated to keep playing on tour.

"For sure, there is more behind than in front of my career," he said in Montreal. "But I don't think about retirement. Day by day is my way to work.

"I have motivation to keep going so it's difficult to think about not playing," adding that if he were to "wake up with no motivation to improve," it would be time for retirement.

His up and down performances since returning from injury and illness have not affected his mentality or ability to enjoy himself off the court, he says. "Normally I don't lose the smile. I do not have one reason to lose the smile, even if I lose 100 tennis matches in the future."

Nadal is currently No. 10 in the rankings, and comes into Montreal having just won a title in Hamburg. He won his first-round doubles match in Montreal with Fernando Verdasco over Jack Sock and Tomas Berdych, 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.
