Rafael Nadal has indicated that he is willing to play Spain's Group I Davis Cup tie against Denmark, to be held in September.

"If the captain has confidence in me, then probably yes, I would be open to playing," said Nadal in Hamburg.

Nadal, like most of Spain's top players, did not play the Group I tie against Russia following Wimbledon. Spain led 2-0 before falling to the Russians on the road. Until recently, Spain’s players were caught up in a dispute about the choice of Davis Cup captain, a position now in the hands of Conchita Martinez.

Nadal, who has not played Davis Cup since 2013, must play one more tie to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The world No. 10 advanced to the Hamburg final with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Andreas Seppi, a match during which he appeared to experience a breathing problem. Nadal received medical attention at 2-0 in the second set, telling the umpire he was having a problem in his chest, with the trainer then proceeding to work on the rib area.

Nadal subsequently returned to court and completed his victory, having few further problems except for getting broken at 5-1 on a double fault.

"From the beginning I played great, since the first game that I hit a few winners," said Nadal. "I was very comfortable on court today, feeling the ball well, with topspin to his backhand and then changing to his forehand down the line—a very important shot for me. In general it was a very positive match."

Nadal pointed to his consistency during the encounter, which follows a week and a season of uneven performances. "I'm very happy for that," he said. "I think I played a great match.”
