Carla Suarez Navarro says the Spanish players have been affected by their ongoing dispute with the Spanish Tennis Federation, but backs new Davis Cup captain Conchita Martinez to effectively lead both the men's and women's teams.

The appointment of the previous Davis Cup captain, Gala Leon Garcia, was not popular with the leading Spanish men, with their objections prompting the resignation of the federation president. The new president named Martinez, the Fed Cup captain, as Davis Cup captain. The changes followed a public letter signed by both ATP and WTA Spanish players denouncing the federation.

"When you play Fed Cup or Davis Cup, you just want to play, but sometimes the federation... they don't ask to us, are you really happy or do you want to change, in this case, the Davis cup captain," Suarez Navarro told press at Stanford. "It's difficult but we have a meeting, boys and girls, at Wimbledon," Suarez Navarro said. "Now they change the president."

The world No. 10 has played Fed Cup with Martinez as captain and said she could hold both positions, but noted that being a dual captain also creates more responsibility. "We play in different weeks. Fed Cup and Davis Cup, are two different competitions. But it is true Conchita will have more," said Suarez Navarro, noting that Spain has a Davis Cup tie coming up that will take much of the captain's attention. "She is going to US Open, she will have to watch the men first... but also we have three or four girls."

"She will have to work hard."

Though former Grand Slam champion Martinez has indicated that she would like to stay in her position, Suarez Navarro suggested the men will have more discussions, saying, "When they are finished with Davis Cup they are going to talk and see if they want Conchita for the next year or if they want another captain only for Davis Cup."
