Johanna Konta, who nearly upset Venus Williams in the quarterfinals at Wuhan, has risen quickly this season, going up 100 spots from the start of the year.

The 24-year-old qualified for the tournament and upset Andrea Petkovic, Victoria Azarenka and Simona Halep before she went down to Williams. Konta came back from 5-1 in the third set against Halep to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. She then fell to Williams, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

"I take a lot of confidence from the fact that I played six matches in a row and I'm in good health," Konta said. "Obviously besides needing a good night's sleep, I'm in good health. Honestly, that's probably the biggest positive: To be able to play at such a high level against some of the best players in the world and to keep repeating that day in and day out. I think that's probably the biggest confidence boost I could hope for. Otherwise I've got a lot to work on. I'm definitely not satisfied with everything, but I'm content with where I am right now."

This summer, she won two Challengers back-to-back in Canada. Then the Brit qualified for the U.S. Open, and beat Petkovic and the Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza before losing against Petra Kvitova.

Born in Australia to Hungarian parents, the now British citizen will reach a career-high ranking of No. 50 on Monday. Konta ended the 2014 season ranked No. 150.
Konta decided not to play Beijing next week because she didn’t want to have to travel right away and have qualification matches the next day, adding that she needs to rest. However, she will return to Europe and play Linz and Luxembourg, as well as a $100,000 Challenger in France.

Konta will be the highest-ranking British woman in singles. Heather Watson is currently ranked No. 60, while Laura Robson, who returned to play in late June after being sidelined with an injury, is currently ranked. No. 539.
