Former No. 1 John Newcombe said both Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic can reach the Top 10. Tomic is currently ranked No.18, while 20-year-old Kyrgios is ranked No. 30.
Kyrgios is the youngest player in the Top 30, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australia Open, the final of Estoril and the fourth round of Wimbledon.
However, the Australian has the tendency lose his temper and he was fined and put on probation for comments directed at Stan Wawrinka at the Rogers Cup.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Newcombe says that fellow Australians want to see Kyrgios shine.
"Everybody is on his side," Newcombe told AAP. “He's definitely a Top 10 potential player, but all the other stuff has to go away because it doesn't happen when you're doing all the other stuff. Everybody's going to be watching and hoping that he does (succeed), and if he does, everybody's going to be on his side.”
Tomic ended the 2015 season at his highest ranking ever, but his year was not without struggles. During the summer, the 23-year-old was arrested in Miami and charged with resisting arrest and trespassing (all charges were dropped in October). He defended his Bogota title immediately after the Miami incident. He also reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, and the quarters of Indian Wells and Shanghai. But Tomic has still been unable to beat anyone within the Top 10.
"He's probably happy with his fitness but for a guy his size, he has to be exceptionally fit in order to get his mobility moving around the court," Newcombe said. "If he does that he can get in the Top 10."
