It was hard to miss CoCo Vandeweghe’s commercial for the Masimo MightySat during Indian Wells. The 30-second ad for the newly released fingertip pulse oximeter played on nearly every changeover.

If you think the MightySat looks like something you’ve seen in hospitals, then you’d be correct. Released earlier this year, the portable device measures respiration rate (the number of breaths per minute) as well as heart rate. Using an invention called Signal Extraction Technology, the Masimo MightySat measures light absorption in your finger to determine oxygen saturation and pulse rate noninvasively.

The Masimo MightySat connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to the Masimo Personal Health and Apple Health App for easy tracking. You can get precise measurements before or after working out, or even before bed or first thing in the morning, just by slipping it on your finger.

The device allows athletes to know more about their bodies by knowing when to push harder and when to take a break. For Vandeweghe, a notoriously powerful player, it’s about control. “Data gives me control,” the world No. 36 says simply.

Breath rate devices are become more common outside of hospitals for elite athletes, but Masimo is trying to appeal to the masses. With the trend of wearable fitness trackers in full blast, Masimo may be taking the next logical step.
